Master in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Welcome The MS program in Molecular Biology is divided into five semesters with 60 credits distributed in courses that are designed to teach the student the needed concepts to understand modern biology and biotechnology and to acquire the necessary skills to solve the problems of those disciplines. 60% of these courses are theoretical and taught in site using presentations, workshops and other activities. The remaining 40% is individual work in which the student practices using the concepts of cell and molecular biology. Laboratory workshops related to the courses are carried out. In the postgraduate courses there is an emphasis on applied aspects, getting familiar with biotechnology techniques, gaining an entrepreneurial spirit and creating and developing biotechnology companies. These are theoretical and practical courses that include lectures, lab demonstrations, guest lectures and visits to industry and other laboratories of molecular biology and biotechnology. Electives allow students to delve into the area of ??their choice. Mission This program trains research teachers and emerging entrepreneurs in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, able to apply acquired knowledge to the solution of regional, national and global problems regarding human, animal and plant health, industrial production, biodiversity and environmental management. Objectives The main objective of the program is to train faculty researchers in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology with an entrepreneurship spirit. General Objectives To train qualified personnel to learn and understand the fundamental concepts of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Train staff in the general techniques of Molecular Biology and the special branch of Biotechnology of their choice.  Propose relevant research projects in molecular biology and biotechnology to be developed by students of the program.  Provide business training in biotechnology.  Strengthen the research structure of the Universidad Tecnologica in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Specific Obectives Develop basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and mathematics applied to biological systems. Describe to a molecular level the structure and functioning of biological beings. Analyze the general methodology for studying the structure and function of biological macromolecules. Learn and practice techniques for the analysis of the structure and function of proteins. Learn and practice techniques for the analysis of the structure and function of nucleic acids. Provide training to develop original research projects. Develop a research project. Provide training in modern techniques of information management in the biological area. Provide training in the application of general principles to create, design and develop the biotechnology industry.

Specialization in Internal Medicine

Mission The Specialization in Internal Medicine is a program designed to deepen the understanding of the care of sick patients from 18 years of age. The Postgraduate program meets the need for clinical specialists in the region with knowledge in this area. The program is developed to strengthen certain indispensable areas to proper care of a patient such as cardiology, neurology, dermatology, endocrinology, rheumatology, geriatrics, oncology, gastroenterology, hematology, among others. Vision In the near future, the specialist in internal medicine will be pioneer in the field of research and will have positively and significantly influenced the community with their knowledge. Objectives General Objectives To train specialists in the care, teaching, administrative and research tasks related to internal medicine, taking into account the needs of the country. Acquire theoretical and practical scientific knowledge and relevant skills for the care of patients at different stages in internal medicine. Specific Objectives:  Acquire the cognitive knowledge in the area of ??internal medicine, to lead the patient in the bio-psycho-social aspects Acquire the capacity to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate the patients with clinical problems while fully knowing the physio-pathological mechanisms and therapeutic indications and limitations, to develop clinical skills in the area of ??internal medicine. Perform a medical history and physical examination, order the laboratory tests and other paraclinical tests that are necessary. Be able to evaluate the cost / benefit value of them both economically and emotionally. Analyze the information obtained by the medical history and tests ordered, to finally establish a treatment plan. Train the medical internist ethically. Promote the research capacity that will enable clinical problem solving, applying the scientific method and evidence-based medicine. Encourage interdisciplinary teamwork that benefits the patient, enhancing human values ??such as respect, wisdom, solidarity and coexistence To develop knowledge and skills necessary to describe and understand the total care of the adult, from the ambulatory management for prevention, promotion, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of chronic illness to management in the hospital and in the Intensive Care Unit for the diagnosis and treatment of more severe illnesses. Teach to use diagnostic and therapeutic technology in a rational manner, taking into account the management of new information compared to what they had previously. Specialization in Psychiatry

General Information The Specialization in Psychiatry of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira is a clinical postgraduate program aimed at general practitioners and non-psychiatrists specialists not that look for an overall education in psychiatry with training in the biological, psychological and social issues which affect health and mental illness. The program has lasts 3 years in which the student receives direct and personal teaching with rotations in institutions of first, second and third level health care and specialized in psychiatry, besides the community practices. The graduate is able to get involved in the process of mental health - illness, solve the psychiatric problems of children, adolescents, adults and seniors and research to generate new knowledge. Mission The Specialization in Psychiatry of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira educates professionals with a biopsychosocial approach and develops the scientific knowledge in the area of ??mental health for the benefit of people and communities. Integrate in his/her practice the biological, psychological and social-cultural factors in order to understand the mental disorders. Conduct the evaluation and appropriate psychiatric history as a diagnostic method by formulating an etiopathogenic hypothesis at all stages of the life cycle of the patients. Profile Professional and Occupational Profile The specialist in psychiatry of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira is a professional who is able to respond to the needs of mental health and disease processes of the population and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this specific field. At a Caring Level Able to design and implement strategies and programs to promote mental health and prevent psychiatric illness, and to determine the epidemiological profile of a community. Competent to diagnose and implement timely, efficient and ethical psychiatric therapy most appropriate for each case and implement strategies for the reintegration of patients to their family, community and work with the participation of related disciplines and the creation of interdisciplinary teams. In general practice, handles normal and abnormal psychoemotional responses related to organic pathologies with the fundamentals of liaison psychiatry. He/she is an expert in the management of psychiatric emergencies and of normal and abnormal psycho-emotional aspects generated in the different phases of disasters. Is able to give appropriate and timely primary, secondary and tertiary care and refer patients requiring a higher level, following the rules of referral. At the Administrative Level The specialist in psychiatry has basic knowledge of the laws governing the health system, the medical practice and the specialty, the rules governing the scope of care for patients and teaching assistance agreements. The psychiatrist is able to structure the development of a mental health unit based on levels of complexity, given the current legal framework regarding aspects of location, technology, human resource structure, development of management guidelines, strategic work plans based on institutional needs and quality assurance. He/she can also design and lead the development of services and mental health programs in general and mental health care for individuals and groups to lessen the impact of mental disorders. At a Teaching Level The specialist is able to lead educational programs in villages, to teach undergraduate and postgraduate health science students with an emphasis on mental health and psychiatry, and to conduct continuing education processes with non-psychiatric physicians, while being able to: Conduct educational activities during the performance of the medical practice. Educate and motivate the community on health issues. Design, develop and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention in the community, according to the particular characteristics of each community and its environment. Design, develop and evaluate training programs for medical and paramedical staff. Participate in training of undergraduate students and postgraduate students in the areas of health. In the Research field The specialist has basic knowledge on research methodology, clinical epidemiology and evidence-based medicine. He/she is able to: Design or participate in research in basic, social, clinical and epidemiological areas. Disseminate research results to the scientific community and society. Use the results of research to generate and promote scientific and technological development, proposing alternative solutions to community problems.

Specialization in Management of Health Systems

Welcome The Specialization in Management of Health Systems with its 15 years of existence is a contribution made by the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira to the development of the Health Sector. The social security model of the country requires professionals with high capacity for innovation and leadership to build a new range of Health Services, capable of achieving the goals of the laws and regulations or propose alternatives when its application is not viable. The Specialization is an open space for creativity with a solid academic foundation allowing systematic approach to train specialists in specific areas of management, health systems, public health, research, human development, environmental management and with the financial component in the field of health. Mission The specialization in Management of Health Systems is a postgraduate program of the Health Sciences Faculty at the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira that educates specialized human talent in the area of management. Management is complemented by a specialist concerned with society, business and individuals in terms of ensuring the quality and humanization of services, which contribute to improving the well-being of humans and their social groups. Vision By 2012 the specialization in Management of Health Systems will be a specialized with accreditation of high quality, and regional and national recognition. Objectives To train professionals with a post graduate level of specialization in the design, development and management of health systems and services. Contribute to the solution of health problems through the training of specialized personnel in health systems with systems approach. Increase knowledge on health systems and services through research and extension. Profiles Professional Profile During all the activities of the program there will be a special emphasis in orientating the graduate to self-learning, respecting their peers and ethical application of knowledge. Given the strong social and humanistic training in the program, the graduate is expected to be a leader with a high academic level, with critical and research capacity in interdisciplinary teams to interact with an attitude of dialogue, tolerance and respect for differences. Mission: The specialization in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology seeks to train professionals in molecular biology and biotechnology that are able to propose viable alternative solutions in the field of modern biology. Objectives: General: To train students in the understanding and analysis of biological systems from a molecular perspective to expand their knowledge, use of best available information in molecular biology, facilitate technology transfer processes and facilitate the resolution of specific problems of different sectors of production and of human activity having to do with the biological field. Specific: To train specialists in the area of molecular biology and biotechnology to be able to convey in their jobs the knowledge acquired and thus become an important multiplier. To train specialists with high capacity for interdisciplinary work to enable them to offer solutions to the problems of the region. To train specialists with the ability to formulate research projects, participate in its implementation and present the results accordingly. Prehospital Care Technology

Professional Profile The Prehospital Care Technologists (PHCT) are persons duly certified by an Accredited Institution to perform the art and science of pre hospital care practice under the medical orientation. The goal is to prevent and reduce mortality and morbidity due to illness or trauma. The Prehospital Care Technologists (PHCT) must provide care to patients in emergency situations in the outpatient environment. General Objective: To train technologists in emergency medical care, providing theoretical and practical elements to intervene in a qualified manner with a comprehensive view of human beings in their biological, psychological and social development phases to improve health care in the community Occupation Profile Emergencies and disasters prehospital care Performs in an outpatient environment and can work in fire departments, ambulance services, public or private, military, rescue teams, hospitals and civil defense. Must be flexible to change at the site of emergency because the situation can be complex and patient care should be initiated immediately. Veterinary Medicine

General Information The Veterinary Medicine Program is focused in solving problems related to animal health and production by improving the quality of life of these and the general population. Therefore it has been divided into 10 semesters with five main areas of training which are: Basic Biomedical Sciences, Animal Health, Animal Production, Humanities, and Economics and Financial Management. Our students have adequate infrastructure in terms of existing laboratories in the Health Sciences Faculty and field practices that are conducted through agreements with producers in the livestock sector. During the last 2 semesters the program also offers clinical rotations and internships. Mission: Veterinary Medicine of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira is a program dedicated to educating professionals of the livestock sector with an overall education, developing scientific knowledge between teaching, research, innovation and extension with high quality standards. General And Specific Objectives To train well rounded professionals with a solid social, humanistic and technical-scientific approach, with critical and investigative skills to enable him/her to develop optimally in the local, regional, national and international levels in the areas of animal health and production. With an emphasis on Business Development and Reproductive Biotechnology. Develop projects related to the solution of problems related to animal science to improve the quality of life of these and of society. Sports and Recreation Sciences

Mission: The Sports and Recreation Sciences program trains professionals with a biopsychosocial approach and develops the scientific knowledge in the area of ??health related to sports, recreation and physical activity for the benefit of individuals and communities. Vision: To be a recognized center of academic excellence for its achievements in the field of health through sport, recreation and physical activity at national and international level. General Objective: Train professionals in Sports and Recreation from an overall perspective, enabling them to coach, lead and manage physical activity, sports and recreation while being focused on the social welfare of the individual and the community. Specific Objectives  Maintain a continuous process of curriculum update by using educational thinking and educational modernization that tends to the overall development of the human being. Establish and develop research interests, in line with regional needs and national requirements. Design and implement a program which creates spaces for social development in the region and nation. Achieve regional, national and international recognition as a generator of health development processes through sports and recreation. Strengthen the program management to have autonomy and efficiency in the processes of teaching, research and extension. Actively participate as generators of the welfare of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira. Stimulate the ongoing education of the teachers to meet the program needs and goals Develop and offer a post graduate program. Justification Since the year of 1990, this program belongs to the Medicine School of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira. It was created due to the need for a space for professional training in areas related to sports and recreation. From its beginning, the programmatic discussion was centered on the need to improve the quality of life through sports and recreation for the general population (non-school, no athletes) who do not have access to skilled professionals to guide them. Given the innovative Vision, its program has evolved from a continuing process of retraining and skills in the content, courses, prerequisites, practice, academic settings, institutional relations and human and technical resources. The administrative structure has undergone significant changes in the conformation of the areas and advisory committees, but follows the general guidelines of the Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira, where for every program there is a director and a board of teachers (the latter considered the highest decision-making decisions). Advisory committees are the internships, final project and curriculum with four fields of knowledge or areas such as Sport, Recreation, Basic and Applied and Research and Development. Understand the components of the scientific rationale for comprehensive health care. Know the components and develop skills in the biological, psychological and social dimensions of the individual and collective health to perform in different contexts, knowing his/her capabilities and limitations. Schedule and implement activities to promote health Know, promote and respect the rights to health and life of humans and animals and protect the environment. Understand the importance of other sciences and disciplines for addressing health and interact with them with respect for cultural diversity. Understand, design and implement intervention strategies related to the health culture. Understand the foundations of physical education, recreation and human development to design and implement intervention strategies. Know the Health System and its foundations to engage in comprehensive health care and know the subsystem in order to assume critical positions, being proactive in relation to public policy. Identify the conceptual elements of social and humanistic developments related to health and get engaged in different training areas with an attitude of solidarity towards different social groups. Understand the fundamentals of entrepreneurship and apply them in the design and development of health-related projects Understand the fundamentals of epidemiological awareness in order to design and implement activities and models necessary for comprehensive health care. Understand, design and implement intervention psychomotor development strategies in living organisms at different stages or cycles. Know and apply legal and ethical principles during professional practice with ethical behavior towards the individual and collective health. Acquire the basics on sanitation to design and implement intervention strategies related to the preservation, respect, protection and proper maintenance of environmental health. Know the basics of hygiene, safety and risk management to implement them while taking self-care measures for all the team and using biosecurity elements on the performance. Have the knowledge and implement risk management activities of emergencies and disasters. Acquire the fundamentals to design and develop scientific health research. Interpret the administration principles and apply them in the management of health services.
